The Cornerstone of Pilanesberg

The Volcano that gave birth to a Game Reserve
The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Pilanesberg National Park – a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions some 1.3 billion years ago. Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature.

The park exists within the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and wetter Lowveld vegetation, commonly referred to as “Bushveld”. Unlike any other large park, unique overlaps of mammals, birds and vegetation occur because of this transition zone.

The creation of the Pilanesberg National Park is considered one of the most ambitious programmes of its kind to be undertaken anywhere in the world. The Operation Genesis, which involved the game-fencing of the reserve and the reintroduction of long-vanished species, began during the late 70’s. 6000 animals were resettled into the park over the course of the early 1980s. Operation Genesis is still the largest game translocation undertaken in the world, and as a result the park now has in excess of 10,000 animals.

One main attraction of the Pilanesberg is that it is malaria free and so no precautionary prophylactics are necessary. However during the rainy season there are plenty of mosquitoes and ticks in the grass so insect repellent is advisable.

Directions

From Pretoria/Johannesburg:

Get onto the N4 toll road to Rustenburg.
Take the R556 off-ramp and travel to Sun City.
Pass Sun City on your right hand side.
Continue for 4 km until you reach a 4 way stop.
Turn right on the R565, Derdepoort Road (Swartruggens) towards Black Rhino Game Reserve. Continue for approximately 29 km through some small villages (beware of speed humps).
Find the thatched entrance and Black Rhino Game Reserve sign on your right hand side. Sign in at the gate and drive directly to the lodge. A standard clearance sedan should be able to reach the lodge. We have 2 entrances to the lodge so please ask at the gate which entrance you should use to reach your suite.

The Black Rhino Reserve forms part of the Greater Pilanesberg National Park measuring 57 000 hectares. Situated in the north western corner of the Pilanesberg National Park, The Black Rhino Reserve is just under 2 500 hectares in size and represents the first portion of private land incorporated into the Pilanesberg National Park. It is a private concession with its own entrance on the north-western side of the park.

Elephant, buffalo and a variety of antelope often roam in this area as they take shelter in remote areas not accessible to other visitors to Pilanesberg National Park. Characterised by a beautiful forest of Tamboti trees and occasional sightings of the bad tempered Black Rhino, the Black Rhino Reserve is home to the BIG 5 (Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant, White & Black Rhino) as well as a wide variety of antelope species (including Sable, Tsetsebe, Eland, Kudu and Springbok) and the rare sightings of wild dog.

With a species list of over 354, the Black Rhino Reserve is also a true “birders paradise”.
